I led the interaction design of two iOS tablet apps, and helped guide the design of a third. Each app aimed to be the technology platform for multiple newspapers to implement their own app. Design required consideration of multiple publisher (The Austrailan, The Daily Telegraph, The Herald etc.) needs as well as the consumers needs.
Tablet app platforms- Herald Sun (2011–12)
- News.com.au (2013, supporting role)
- The Australian (2013)
Each time we embarked on the design of a tablet platform there were different stakeholders who aimed to solve different problems. My role was to champion solving the problems our customers had.
Over the course of each project and continuing into the next, I conducted and collated research to help understand and facilitate design for the context of use and needs of tablet news consumers.
I employed multilple research methods including: desk research, surveys, Kano survey / analysis, diary studies, one on one interviews, focus groups and usability testing. Based on the findings of these activies I led the creation of a framework of measurable qualities and attributes of news / sport / buisness / and lifestyle content services for tablets.
The framework described qualities that impact user perception of news services and provided tools to measure those qualities. The aim of the framework was to help News Corp focus on the problems we could solve for users.
I learnt about the motivations, behaviours and desires of people who read, watch, and listen to the news on mobile and tablet devices. By communicating research findings I worked to build user centred design capacity within delivery and leadership teams for News Corp Australia and News Corp.
